Dan DeCarlo
1919–2001
Dan DeCarlo was born on December 12, 1919, and passed away on December 18, 2001 — just six days after his 82nd birthday. An American cartoonist who spent the bulk of his career at Archie Comics, he is credited on an extraordinary 2,455 issues across titles including *Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica*, *Archie*, and *Betty and Veronica*, with work spanning from 1948 well into the following decades.
DeCarlo's most enduring contribution was reshaping the visual identity of the entire Archie line. Arriving in the late 1950s and refining his approach through the early 1960s, he modernized the publisher's cast of characters into the clean, appealing forms that would define the house style for generations — essentially the look most readers still associate with Riverdale today.
Beyond his draftsmanship, DeCarlo is widely recognized as a co-creator of three significant characters: Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who would eventually anchor her own television franchise; Josie and the Pussycats, whose lead character was named in honor of his wife; and Cheryl Blossom. Working across roles as artist, inker, colorist, letterer, and writer, he brought a versatility to Archie Comics that few contributors have matched. His influence on the publisher's aesthetic remains as recognizable and durable as any in American humor comics.
