Koko and Kola engage in magical mischief when they attempt to prevent spring from arriving by stealing a magic lever from a wizard named Thaw, leading them to disguise themselves as watermelons and cause chaos in town. After their scheme fails and they accidentally spill ink on Koko during a visit to a father's desk, the characters are transported to an underwater seashell palace where a mermaid named Mary rewards them with star-fish medals and enlists a flying fish to carry them home to a fresh water lake. The story concludes with Raymond and the animal companions arriving home, where they learn a lesson about the consequences of their mischievous adventure.
