In "Les marchands d'esclaves," The Phantom tracks a band of slavers after they capture Diana Palmer, only to be captured himself and left for dead in the desert. When the slavers abandon her as too dangerous to sell, he regains consciousness and takes control of the group to hunt for her—only for British soldiers to intervene and rescue Diana before he can reach her. Believing The Phantom dead, Diana returns to Morristown, where she’s sent to a hospital to recover. Her doctor, concerned for her mental state, keeps her from learning that The Phantom still lives, forcing him to disappear once more.
