“De pire en pire”

In "De pire en pire," the kids escape the tension at Ronnie's beach cottage—where her parents clash over renovations—by heading to the shore to gather shells. There, they stumble upon an unexpected relic: a massive WWII shell that quietly echoes the chaos they’re trying to outrun. Written and illustrated by Bob Bolling, with coloring by Barry Grossman, the story unfolds with quiet weight, its cover by Dexter Taylor capturing the moment’s stillness.

The kids are visiting Ronnie's beach cottage, where her parents are fighting over proposed renovations to the house. To get away from the Lodges' fighting, the children go down to the beach to collect shells. There they find the biggest shell of all, and an example of what can happen when fighting gets out of hand: a shell from World War II.
