The kids are visiting Ronnie's beach cottage, where her parents are fighting over proposed renovations to the house. To get away from the Lodges' fighting, the children go down to the beach to collect shells. There they find the biggest shell of all, and an example of what can happen when fighting gets out of hand: a shell from World War II.
