About this Issue

Little Dot #27 (November 1957) is a mid-run installment of the anthology series that served as the primary home of Richie Rich during the four years before the character earned his own title. By this point in the Little Dot run, the Richie Rich backup feature had fully established the core cast — Richie, Freckles, Pee-Wee, Regina, and Richard Sr. — and stories from this era were considered strong enough to be reprinted multiple times across dedicated Richie Rich titles in the 1970s, a testament to their lasting appeal. The issue also sits at a historically resonant moment in Harvey's Silver Age output: original artwork from its Richie Rich story bears a rough pencil sketch of Hot Stuff on the reverse, drawn by Warren Kremer just weeks after Hot Stuff's own debut, offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse at the creative overlap driving Harvey's rapid expansion of characters in 1957.

History

Richie Rich was created by publisher Alfred Harvey and artist Warren Kremer — though Kremer and editor Sid Jacobson both separately claimed originating the character — and debuted as a backup feature in Little Dot #1 (September 1953). By issue #27, the strip was well into its four-year run as a guest feature before Richie received his own solo title in 1960. The story art from this issue was produced by Kremer at twice-up scale in ink on Bristol board, consistent with Harvey's production methods of the era, and the survival of that original art has provided researchers with unusual documentary detail about the issue's creation.
