After her father’s death, Paula works to support her mother and brother, but they still live in poverty. She attends night school and is promoted to head of personnel at a store. Her family’s life turns around. Paula and politician Glen fall in love, but he’s indifferent to slum clearance and Paula promotes a bill in its favor. When a slum building collapses Glen sees the light, votes for the bill, and reconciles with Paula.
