Elaine separates her spirit from her physical body in an attempt to find her friend Mona’s spirit. Elaine ends up in the Dreaming, captured by Brute and Glob. She escapes and finds herself at Effrul, an entrance to Hell. When she enters Hell she is captured by Lady Lys, but is rescued by Duma and returned to her physical body.
