“The Glass Tube of Death”

In "The Glass Tube of Death," Torch and Toro are trapped in a sealed glass capsule by the villain Moonface, who sets a bomb to detonate beneath the Capitol. With only a tiny leak to work with, Torch uses his flame to superheat the glass, breaking free just as Moonface meets his end by grabbing live wires. Art by Harry Sahle brings the tense, claustrophobic scene to life, while Alex Schomburg’s cover captures the high-stakes danger of the moment. A 10-cent comic from 1943, this issue stands as a classic example of early superhero action.

A Nazi agent named Moonface captures Torch and Toro by placing them into a glass tube which he plans to connect with a timer on bombs underneath the capitol building. Torch finds that he can flame with his finger so the capsule must have a small leak. He superheats the glass so that it shatters and Moonface, realizing that his plans have been ruined, grabs live wires electrocuting himself.
