Monte Hale encounters bandits planning to steal gold during a traveling circus performance and take a child hostage. Meanwhile, in a separate story, Gray Hawk, a young Otapi warrior, uses his wits and knowledge of superstition to frighten away enemy Hatchet warriors who threaten his village, convincing them that the People of the Otapi are protected by a spirit mightier than theirs.

As tensions rise, Monte must outwit the gang’s ambush while protecting Nan and uncovering their true intentions.
