Alice wants to get out of the slums where she and boyfriend Frank live, but Frank is content to stay there and thinks that’s good enough for his future children. They argue and Frank decides to marry someone else. Alice quits her job in a mill and is hired as a receptionist, going from blue-collar to white-collar. She and her boss Steve fall in love, marry, and have 2 children.
