My Own Romance #43
In "If I Should Lose You!", Jean wrestles with doubts about marrying Neil, whose quiet, bookish nature feels worlds apart from her own energetic spirit. As she seeks advice from her friend Gloria, now a mother, Jean begins to see that love isn’t about matching personalities but finding common ground—even in unexpected hobbies. When Neil surprises her by taking tennis lessons, Jean realizes that compatibility might not be about sameness, but about willingness to grow together. Vince Colletta handles both the interior art and the cover, bringing the emotional beats of this 1955 romance to life with expressive detail.

Jean loves Neil, but they have very different personalities, and she fears this would prevent a happy marriage. Neil asks her to reconsider, and she contacts her friend Gloria, married and with a new baby. Gloria says couples develop new activities and may drop old ones for various reasons. Jean discovers she enjoys some of Neil’s hobbies and interests. She’s still worried because his parents are divorced, but Neil’s father takes the blame: he never tried to modify his tastes and habits. When athletic Jean learns Neil is taking tennis lessons, she decides the marriage is back on.
