“They Melt at Night!”

In "They Melt at Night!", a disillusioned scientist unleashes a terrifying corrosive capable of dissolving automobiles—only to face a moral reckoning when he realizes the true danger of his creation. Written with quiet intensity, this 1955 tale from John Forte (art and inks) and Artie Simek (letters) explores the weight of invention and conscience. The cover by Carl Burgos captures the story’s eerie tension, a stark visual echo of the science gone too far.

A scientist, who is bitter at having his ideas rejected, succeeds in developing a corrosive that melts automobiles. He plans to extort money for the counter agent, but has a change of heart when a dollar bill touches the corrosive and burns, thinking that it may be a sign of what could happen if a dictator gets control of his formula. He destroys the formula and resolves to work for the benefit of mankind.
