Romantic Hearts #5
In "I Could Only Love a Winner," a lonely office worker named Jane grapples with her feelings after being told her beauty is a sin, making her hesitant to embrace love—especially when her co-worker Bob seems to pull away after a mix-up involving a car that looked just like his. Written with quiet emotional weight and illustrated by Bill Savage with inks by Dick Beck, this 1954 romance explores misunderstandings, self-worth, and the fragile hope of second chances. The cover, also by Dick Beck, captures the moment of tension and longing that defines the story.

Jane is a lonely, repressed office worker who has “guilt feelings about being attractive” because her mother told her it was “wicked to let boys kiss you.” She falls in love with co-worker Bob but when Jane accidentally gets in a car with a stranger and drives off, he considers her “anybody’s easy pick-up!” and breaks up with her. Bob didn’t realize that the stranger’s car was identical to his and Jane just made a mistake. When Bob learns the truth, he asks Jane to forgive him and they are reunited.
