Showa: A History of Japan #[2]
In "The New Oriental Order," Shigeru Mizuki returns to the harrowing frontlines of wartime Japan, where a small unit faces certain death on a mission they know is hopeless. As Shigeru keeps watch in a crumbling barracks, the quiet tension gives way to sudden violence—then a dream, vivid and terrifying, echoes across the ocean, where his parents pray for his return. Written by Mizuki and Zack Davisson, and illustrated with haunting clarity by Mizuki himself, this powerful chapter of Showa: A History of Japan captures the weight of war through a single, unforgettable moment. The cover, also by Mizuki, echoes the story’s somber, dreamlike intensity.
