"Abbie Slats," by Raeburn Van Buren, follows a lonely lighthouse keeper named Abbie who falls in love with a visiting stranger named Duke Killoy; when Duke leaves suddenly, Abbie's elderly mother consoles her, but Abbie vows never to let men leave her heart unguarded again. "Hap Hopper, Washington Correspondent" depicts political intrigue as Hap helps a jailed man named Fox escape prison with plans to reach Washington and prevent O'Dey's Senate confirmation appointment, culminating in a chase scene where Hap boards an airplane headed to the capital, to be continued in the next issue.
