About this Collection

This collection kicks off the 2020 Superman: The Man of Steel series, re-presenting the earliest adventures of the modern Superman era. It gathers the first six issues of John Byrne's landmark 1986 reboot, which redefined the Man of Steel's origin, supporting cast, and powers for a new generation of readers. The volume includes key early encounters with Lex Luthor and the first appearance of the new, post-Crisis Superman.

In Superman: The Man of Steel #1 ("Book One: Prologue: From Out the Green Dawn..."), John Byrne’s return to the character kicks off with a poignant journey home to Smallville, where Superman finds his long-lost Kryptonian spacecraft gone—but not forgotten. As he uncovers a hidden program that floods his mind with Krypton’s entire legacy, he confronts the lasting impact of his past choices, including the effect of revealing his powers to Lana, and resolves to embrace a future with Lois. The story, illustrated by Byrne with inks by Dick Giordano and colors by Tom Ziuko, features a cover by Byrne and Giordano that captures the emotional weight of this pivotal moment.
