“When the Monster Wakes!”

In "When the Monster Wakes!", Namor stirs in the shattered remains of Atlantis to find his people poised for war, having seized a terrifying new weapon—the Hurricane Inducer—without testing it. Written by Archie Goodwin and brought to life with bold, dynamic art by Dan Adkins (pencils and inks), this gripping tale sees the Sub-Mariner torn between loyalty to his people and the dread of unleashing uncontrollable destruction. Cover by Marie Severin captures the stormy tension, as Namor's desperate act to stop the weapon sets off a chain of consequences he can't foresee.

Namor awakens in the ruins of Atlantis only to find that his army has taken off to start a war with the surface world. They plan on activating their latest and most dangerous weapon, the Hurricane Inducer, but the machine has not been tested and Namor fears that it will cause great harm to friend and foe alike. With his subjects already thinking him a traitor for allying with the piratical Plunderer, Namor doesn't do his tarnished rep any favors when he is caught destroying the Atlantean's most powerful weapon. With the inducer destroyed, the Atlanteans decide to return home.
