The issue is the rare Armageddon 2001 tie-in whose alternate future actually stuck: where virtually every other participating annual depicted a throwaway 'what if' scenario, this one seeded ongoing storylines that ran for years, eventually feeding into Zero Hour: Crisis in Time in 1994. By threading the Team Titans concept through both the line-wide Armageddon 2001 event and Marv Wolfman's concurrent 'Titans Hunt' arc, the annual demonstrated how a crossover could be used to organically launch new characters rather than simply interrupt an existing story. The Team Titans proved popular enough to graduate to their own ongoing series the following year.

The annual was written by Marv Wolfman — the New Titans' architect since the team's 1980 debut — with pencils by Tom Grindberg, inks by Al Vey, Will Blyberg, and Ian Akin, colors by Adrienne Roy, letters by John Costanza, cover inks by Dick Giordano, and editorial oversight by Jonathan Peterson. Wolfman was simultaneously managing 'Titans Hunt,' one of the most structurally ambitious New Titans storylines, when DC asked him to incorporate two separate 1991 crossovers — Armageddon 2001 and War of the Gods — into the same run of issues; CBR's Brian Cronin has noted that Wolfman turned this editorial constraint to his advantage by using the Armageddon 2001 annual slot to introduce the Team Titans, characters he himself created and would continue writing in their own spin-off series starting in 1992. The issue slots narratively between New Titans #79 and #80, during Nightwing's captivity by the Wildebeest Society.
