“Funeral for a Friend!”

In "Funeral for a Friend!", the Autobots mourn Optimus Prime as Ratchet, overwhelmed, retreats to a scrap yard in his ambulance form—only to be hijacked by the Mechanic and his partner during a frantic escape. The Mechanic drags Ratchet to his lair, unaware that the ambulance’s robot form is far from helpless, setting off a tense cat-and-mouse game that culminates in a daring infiltration of the Autobot base. Written by Bob Budiansky and illustrated by Don Perlin, with inks by Brett Breeding and colors by Nel Yomtov, this 1987 Marvel issue captures the emotional weight of loss and the quiet resilience of the Autobots, all framed by Herb Trimpe’s dynamic cover.

As the Autobots attend Optimus Prime's funeral, Ratchet decides not to attend and goes for a drive in his ambulance form, parking up in an auto scrap yard. Whilst fleeing from the police, the Mechanic and his accomplice jump into Ratchet and drive him away. The Mechanic drives to his hideout and attempts to take the ambulance apart when Ratchet reverts to his robot form. The Mechanic follows Ratchet back to the Autobots' base and sneaks in, and tries to take over the base.
