The Transformers #40
In "Pretender to the Throne!", the Decepticons unleash monstrous new Pretenders that blur the line between machine and flesh, forcing the Autobots to counter with their own human-shaped team. When the Autobots uncover a digital echo of Optimus Prime’s mind trapped in a forgotten game, he awakens within the simulation—leading his new Pretenders with the confidence of a warrior in a familiar battle. Written by Bob Budiansky and brought to life by José Delbo’s dynamic art, with inks by Dave Hunt, colors by Nel Yomtov, and lettering by Bill Oakley, this 1988 Marvel classic blends sci-fi ingenuity with a touch of nostalgic irony. The cover, by Delbo and Hunt, captures the clash in bold, striking detail.

The Decepticons create their new Pretenders that look like flesh & blood monsters rather than Transformers, but the Autobots manage to steal and copy their technology and create their own team of Pretenders that look like humans. The Autobots discover that a copy of Optimus Prime's mind had been stored into a computer game after his death, and Optimus Prime leads his new Pretenders to victory over the Decepticon Pretenders, believing it is just another computer game.
