The X-Men #12 is one of the most consequential single issues of the Silver Age, delivering two major debut events in the same story: the first appearance and origin of the Juggernaut (Cain Marko), and the first detailed origin of Professor Charles Xavier himself. The issue carries a cover date of July 1965 and was written by Stan Lee with a cover and page layouts by Jack Kirby — effectively Kirby's last significant artistic contribution to the title before handing penciling duties over to other artists. The finished interior pencils were drawn by Alex Toth, one of the most respected cartoonists in the American comics and animation industries, reportedly working over Kirby's layouts — an unusual 'Marvel Method' collaboration that made this the only Marvel comic Toth is known to have penciled during this era. Vince Colletta provided inks and Sam Rosen lettered. By this point in the title's run, sales were soft relative to other Lee-Kirby books, and Kirby's gradual withdrawal — he left the book entirely by issue #17 — reflected the strain of workload across Marvel's expanding line.
