The X-Men Annual #1
X-Men (vol. 2) Annual #1 is the opening chapter of 'Shattershot,' the first X-office crossover event built entirely within its own family of titles — X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and X-Force — made possible only because the 1991 launch of the adjectiveless X-Men series gave the line enough annuals to sustain a four-part story without borrowing from outside books. Beyond its structural milestone, the issue delivers the first appearance of Mojo II (in shadowed silhouette), Mojo's compassionate clone who would later challenge his creator for control of the Mojoverse. The backup 'X-Men Villains Gallery,' a Danger Room countdown narrated by Wolverine for Jubilee, doubles as a snapshot of how Marvel's editorial office ranked and packaged its mutant rogues' gallery at the height of the franchise's early-1990s dominance, with Danger Room constructs of Omega Red, the Upstarts, Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister, and Magneto each receiving their moment.

The issue went on sale March 3, 1992 with a May 1992 cover date, edited by Bob Harras under editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco. Fabian Nicieza — then the regular writer of X-Force and soon to take over the adjectiveless X-Men title itself — scripted the lead story from layouts by Jim Lee, whose imminent departure to co-found Image Comics meant his involvement was reduced to structural breakdowns rather than finished pencils; the actual penciling was distributed across a jam roster that included P. Craig Russell, Brian Stelfreeze, Adam Hughes, Stuart Immonen, Dan Panosian, Greg Capullo, and Mark Texeira. The backup villains-gallery story was scripted by Dan Slott — later a long-tenured Amazing Spider-Man writer — representing some of his earliest credited work at Marvel.
