Ultimate X-Men #5
Ultimate X-Men #5 is the pivotal early chapter in Peach Momoko's manga-inflected reimagining of mutantkind, delivering two developments that define the arc of the entire series: the first named, on-panel appearance of Shinobu Kageyama as the human face behind the Shadow King entity, and the in-story coining of the 'X-Men' team name by Maystorm — a wry, schoolyard joke about failing grades that lands with genuine weight. It also marks the first active use of Nico Minoru's staff-conjuring ability, cementing her as a key player rather than a curious bystander. Together these moments transform the series from a slow-burn coming-of-age horror into something with a defined team, a defined nemesis, and a clear narrative engine.

Ultimate X-Men (vol. 2) launched in March 2024 as the third title in Marvel's second Ultimate Universe line, alongside Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Black Panther, with Peach Momoko serving as sole writer, penciller, inker, and colorist — a mangaka-style full creative control rarely granted on a Big Two superhero title. Zack Davisson, an Eisner- and Bram Stoker Award-winning translator and scholar of Japanese folklore, handled the English script adaptation, ensuring the story's deep roots in J-horror and Japanese youth culture were not flattened for Western audiences. The character Maystorm had her origin even earlier, having been designed by Momoko for the 'New Champions' variant cover of X-Men #27 (2021–2024 series) before being transplanted into this new universe as a full co-lead.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First named, in-story appearance of Shinobu Kageyama, the Earth-6160 analogue of the Shadow King — the shadowy antagonist who had haunted Armor across the first four issues finally reveals his identity in this issue.
- The 'X-Men' team name is coined for the first time in this issue, proposed by Maystorm (Mei Igarashi) as a joke about bad grades and accepted by Nico Minoru in a closing scene; the Marvel Fandom wiki lists this as the first appearance of the team designation.
- Maystorm (Mei Igarashi) and Nico Minoru are formally listed as joining the nascent team in this issue, per the Marvel Database's appearance credits.
- Nico Minoru uses her staff for the first time: instinctively transforming a magnifying glass into her signature weapon to banish the Shadow King entity erupting from Hisako's omamori charm.
- Surge (Noriko Ashida) appears as a supporting antagonist-adjacent character; her rivalry with Maystorm over electric powers is the other main thread of the issue, with the official solicit framing it as the new mutants' first confrontation with an enemy.
- The issue was written, pencilled, inked, and colored entirely by Peach Momoko, with Zack Davisson as English script adapter and Travis Lanham as letterer; Wilson Moss edited.
- Variant covers for this issue include work by In-Hyuk Lee (1:25 incentive), Pepe Larraz, and Meghan Hetrick (Ultimate Special variant), in addition to Momoko's standard cover.
- The series is set entirely in Japan and deliberately omits classic X-Men landmarks (X-Mansion, Sentinels, Professor X, Cyclops, Wolverine) in favor of a J-horror framework rooted in Japanese folklore and urban legend.
