Alice becomes engaged to Fred, a soldier, but after he leaves for duty, she finds herself drawn to Paul, who claims to want to marry her only for access to her uncle's inheritance. After Alice spurns Paul, she reconnects with Fred upon his return from service. Later, Alice meets the charming Durham Trowbard at a hotel and embarks on an Alaskan adventure with him, during which she begins to question whether their romantic connection is genuine or if he, too, is merely after her wealth and influence.
