“Framing Story”

In *What If...? #60*, "Framing Story," a pivotal moment for the X-Men sees Hank graduate, Scott and Jean announce their marriage, and the rest of the team decide it’s time to strike out on their own—armed with the lessons from Professor X. When Xavier forms a new X-Men to face the living isle of Krakoa, even the Avengers’ intervention can’t prevent tragedy. Written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Ron Randall, with inks by Art Nichols and colors by Bob Sharen, the issue’s cover by Ron Randall and Art Nichols captures the weight of that turning point.

When Hank graduates from the X-Men and Scott and Jean announce their marriage at the same time, the rest of the team decides it is time they leave Xavier as well, using the lessons he taught them in the real world. Professor X forms a new group of X-Men but, when they take on the living isle of Krakoa, they are all killed, even though the Avengers attempt to rescue them.
