Kurt Busiek

Born on September 16, 1960, Kurt Busiek (pronounced BYOO-sik) is an American comic book writer whose career stretches from 1979 to the present day, encompassing nearly nine hundred credited issues across both major publishers and his own creator-owned work.

Busiek built his reputation on stories that examine the superhero genre from fresh angles rather than simply delivering action spectacle. His breakout moment came with Marvels, a limited series that reframed Marvel Universe history through the eyes of an ordinary photojournalist, offering an emotionally grounded perspective on events readers had seen only from heroes' viewpoints. That humanizing instinct carried directly into Astro City, his own long-running series and arguably his most personal achievement, which uses an original cast of characters to explore what life in a superhero world genuinely feels like for everyone living in it.

His work-for-hire output has been equally substantial. A four-year run on The Avengers helped revitalize that team's classic sensibility, while Thunderbolts — which he co-created — introduced a genuinely surprising premise to mainstream superhero comics.
