“What If Someone Else Had Become -- the Amazing Spider-Man”

In *What If? #7*, Marvel explores a fascinating divergence: what if Peter Parker hadn’t been bitten by the radioactive spider? Flash Thompson dons the web-suit as Captain Spider, Betty Brant becomes Spider-Girl, and John Jameson takes up the mantle as Spider Jameson—all before Peter ultimately steps into his destiny as Spider-Man. Written by Don Glut and Roy Thomas, with art by Rick Hoberg and inks by Sam Grainger, this 1978 classic features dynamic storytelling and bold alternate paths, all anchored by the iconic cover by Gil Kane and Joe Sinnott.

What would have happened if someone else had gotten spider powers instead of Peter Parker? Flash Thompson would have named himself Captain Spider and then died in a battle against the Vulture. Betty Brant would have become Spider-Girl, but then retired after failing to stop the thief who murdered Peter's uncle Ben. John Jameson, goaded on by his father, would have become Spider Jameson and then sacrificed his life to save the life of a fellow astronaut. In all these alternate realities, Peter Parker still becomes Spider-Man in the end, as this is his true destiny.
