About the series

From 1971 to 2003, Rip Off Press published The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, a landmark underground comix series by Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavrides. Following the misadventures of three perpetually stoned hippies—Fat Freddy Freekowtski, Freewheelin' Franklin Freek, and Phineas T. Freakers—along with Fat Freddy's Cat, the strip satirized counterculture life, authority, and the absurdities of the era over 13 issues. Its enduring popularity stems from its sharp, irreverent humor and the creators' keen eye for the clash between the 1960s' free-spirited ideals and the straight-laced world.
