Action Comics 80 Years of Superman: The Deluxe Edition #[nn] (2018)
Alfred John Plastino was born on December 15, 1921, and spent much of his career helping define the visual language of Superman comics during one of the character's most formative decades. He died on November 25, 2013.
Plastino broke into the industry in 1941 and went on to become one of DC Comics' most productive Superman artists throughout the 1950s, working alongside fellow Superman illustrator Wayne Boring. His versatility extended well beyond penciling — he also took on writing, inking, lettering, and coloring assignments over a career that touched more than 400 issues, with his heaviest concentration on titles including Superman, Action Comics, and Adventure Comics.
His most enduring contribution to comics history came through his collaboration with writer Otto Binder. Together the two introduced Supergirl, the villainous artificial intelligence Brainiac, and the Legion of Super-Heroes — a teenage super-team whose influence spread across decades of DC storytelling. Each of these co-creations became a cornerstone of the Superman mythology and has been revisited, reimagined, and adapted across television, animation, and film.
Plastino's work reached international audiences through translated editions in Sweden, Spain, and Norway, a testament to Superman's global reach during the postwar era. His legacy rests firmly on those three co-creations alone, any one of which would have secured a lasting place in comics history.
