Jan Duursema, born October 27, 1954, is an American comics artist whose career spans nearly five decades and an unusually broad range of genres and roles — she has worked as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across nearly 300 issues.
Arion #5 (1985)
She entered the industry around 1979, building early credits on DC titles such as *Warlord*, *Arion, Lord of Atlantis*, and the *Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Comic Book*, work that established her as a versatile draftsperson comfortable with fantasy and sword-and-sorcery material. A stint on Marvel's *X-Factor* further diversified her superhero credentials before she found the association that would define her reputation.
Duursema became a central creative force on *Star Wars: Republic* and the broader *Star Wars* comics line, where her dynamic, expressive figure work proved well suited to the saga's mix of action and mythology. Collaborating within that franchise, she co-created several characters who transcended the page: the Twi'lek Jedi Aayla Secura, the Kiffar Jedi Quinlan Vos, and Denin and Vila from Naldar. Aayla Secura in particular achieved remarkable reach, appearing in the prequel films and animated series.
Her sustained productivity — with credits running through 2026 — reflects a career built on craft and adaptability rather than a single breakthrough moment.
