Phil Ortiz
1953–
Phil Ortiz is an American animator and comic artist whose career spans more than three decades, taking him from daily newspaper strips to animated television work. Born in 1953, he has built a particularly strong association with the world of Matt Groening's Springfield, contributing as artist and inker across roughly 250 issues of Bongo Comics titles between 1993 and 2021. His most sustained work appeared in *Simpsons Comics* and *Simpsons Comics Presents Bart Simpson*, though his credits also extend to related titles including *Krusty Comics*, *Simpsons Illustrated*, *Simpsons Comics Treasure Trove*, and *Simpsons Comics Barn Burner*. Capturing the rubbery, expressive visual language of the animated series in a print format presents its own distinct challenges, and Ortiz's long tenure on those books reflects a reliable command of the characters' established look and comedic timing on the page. His breadth of experience across newspaper strips and animation gives his comic work a grounded professionalism that suited the demanding output of Bongo's publishing schedule. Few artists can claim as consistent a presence in the licensed comics of a single franchise over such an extended period.
