Simon Furman

Simon Christopher Francis Furman, born 22 March 1961 in Britain, has built one of the most durable careers in licensed comics, spending four decades as the defining voice behind Hasbro's Transformers on the printed page. He came up through the British comics industry and found his footing at Marvel UK, where he took over scripting duties on the Transformers tie-in title and gradually shaped its tone and mythology far beyond what a promotional comic might ordinarily attempt. That work earned him a transatlantic reputation, and he eventually crossed over to write the American Marvel series as well.

Furman's approach to the Transformers material leaned into genuine science-fiction weight — treating the robot characters as figures capable of tragedy and moral complexity rather than simple action-figure surrogates. His influence extended well past the Marvel years: he laid significant groundwork for both Dreamwave Productions' and IDW Publishing's subsequent Generation 1 continuities, giving him a rare hand in shaping multiple distinct eras of the same franchise. Beyond Transformers, his catalog across nearly forty active years includes notable runs on Alpha Flight, RoboCop, and Doctor Who Magazine, reflecting consistent range within genre work.
