The Log Cabin Library, Vol. I, No. 31 (October 1889) This serialized gothic mystery concerns Clifford Derwent, a handsome but dissolute gentleman who dies suddenly after squandering his wife Louise Van Stretten's five-million-dollar inheritance. Before burial, Derwent leaves explicit instructions: his coffin must remain unsealed for ten days, with no ice present, and his faithful valet Gregory Hamlin must oversee all arrangements. The widow grieves deeply, convinced she sees his lips move. That midnight, Hamlin visits Trinity Cemetery vault, emerging with a second figure leaning heavily upon him—suggesting Derwent's apparent revival or survival. The narrative then shifts to the widow's reduced circumstances and introduces secondary characters: a pregnant widow, Mrs. Armstead, and her friend Grace Hunter, discussing an Englishman named Vivian described as strikingly handsome. The serial promises supernatural and sensational developments involving deception, hidden identities, and possible vampirism.
