This issue of Beadle and Adams' Weekly (December 20, 1882) features "California Joe, the Mysterious Plainsman" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, who authored numerous frontier adventure serials. The narrative concerns an unknown youth of seventeen who appears mysteriously to aid a westbound emigrant train. After the train's hired guide dies, the boy—dressed in ill-fitting black clothing and riding a bridleless white horse—materializes in the forest to guide lost hunters back to camp. Subsequently, he marks a correct trail through the hills with staked branches, communicates via pencil-written notes, and camps nearby unseen. Though some emigrants suspect deception or supernatural intervention, the boy's evident sincerity gradually wins support. His pale, fearless face and meager possessions suggest he may be a massacre survivor. He introduces himself simply as "Joe," riding bareback into the assembled camp despite four guards on duty.
