Conan befinner sig i ökenstaden Zamboula och attackeras av kannibaler som stryker omkring på gatorna på nätterna. Han räddar även Zabibi från kannibalerna och går med på att hjälpa henne rädda Alafdhal, den sjuke unge mannen hon är förtjust i. De beger sig till templet för att få ett motgift från prästen Totrasmek, men denne vill ha den magiska ringen med Khoralas stjärna i utbyte. Conan dödar prästen och dennes slav och ger sig av med ringen efter att ha tagit hämnd på en girig värdshusvärd.
