“Rolling Thunder”

In "Rolling Thunder," the G.I. Joe team and Cobra clash over a newly formed, volatile island born from the ocean floor—its instability a direct consequence of the seismic event triggered in issues #41 and #42. With the ground shifting beneath them and the island beginning to sink, both sides struggle to maintain control, culminating in a tense evacuation as the Joes are airlifted to safety while the Cobras are left scrambling to swim back, their air and ground transports lost. Written by Larry Hama and illustrated by Ron Wagner, with inks by Tom Palmer, colors by Bob Sharen, and letters by Jim Novak, the cover by Ron Wagner and Bob McLeod captures the chaos of the moment in striking detail.

The Joes and Cobras battle over a new but unstable island that has emerged from the ocean close to the location of Cobra Island, risen up from the underwater quake the Joes caused back in issue #'s 41 and 42. Both sides fail to keep control due to the island mass eventually sinking back under due its instability, and as the Joes are airlifted out in time, the Cobras have to swim home, their air transports not returning in time (not to mention their possible aquatic transports, the two Bugg vehicles present, were destroyed by the Joes new heavy weapons vehicle, the Rolling Thunder).
