Jim Novak, born September 14, 1955, was one of Marvel Comics' most prolific letterers, contributing his craft to nearly every ongoing series the publisher produced across several decades. He passed away in April 2018.
The Amazing Spider-Man #184 (1978)
Novak came up through the industry during the mid-1970s and quickly became a reliable fixture in Marvel's production pipeline. His most frequently credited titles included *Fantastic Four*, *The Avengers*, *The Incredible Hulk*, *The Punisher War Journal*, *The Sensational She-Hulk*, and Jim Starlin's *Dreadstar* — a range that speaks to how broadly his work touched the Marvel universe. Beyond pure lettering, he contributed occasionally as a writer, penciler, and colorist, demonstrating a versatility not always associated with his primary specialty. One of his more historically notable contributions was his involvement in developing the now-iconic *Star Wars* logo.
Fantastic Four #202 (1979)
Though Marvel remained his primary home, Novak also brought his skills to Dark Horse, Boom! Studios, Image, Dynamite, and IDW, giving him a presence across much of the American mainstream comics industry. Over a career spanning roughly five decades — with credits catalogued as far back as 1975 — he accumulated more than a thousand issue credits, a testament to the quiet consistency that defines the best behind-the-scenes craftspeople in the medium.
