Modern Love #7
In "They Wouldn't Let Me Love Him," a poignant 1950 EC tale drawn with quiet precision by Jack Kamen, childhood sweetheart Terry faces a heart-wrenching choice when her fiancé Fred returns from war changed—both in body and spirit. As Jeff's quiet devotion grows and a fateful letter goes unread, Terry must navigate love, duty, and the fragile hope of a second chance. Al Feldstein’s haunting cover captures the emotional weight of a story that lingers long after the final page.

Childhood sweethearts Terry and Fred become engaged when he returns from serving in the war, but she finds him changed, and postpones their wedding. While Fred is away on business, Terry is persistently courted by Jeff. She eventually falls for him and writes Fred a good-bye letter. News comes that Fred’s been in an accident: he’s blind, and can’t read Terry’s letter. She tells him it says she wants to marry him right away. Jeff leaves her a note: he’s stepping aside. Terry marries Fred and finds “a certain peace of mind” caring for him, but will always love Jeff.
