My Own Romance #38
In "A Life to Share," secretary Millie finds herself at a crossroads after accepting a proposal from Frank, not out of love but for the security he offers. When Frank’s sister Helen falls ill, Millie takes on the unexpected responsibility of caring for her household and two young sons, discovering the quiet strength it takes to truly care. The emotional weight of the experience leads her to a quiet but decisive choice: she breaks her engagement, realizing that only real love can sustain such a life. Jay Scott Pike handles both art and inks, while Joe Letterese provides the lettering; the cover, by Al Hartley and Bill Everett, captures the story’s quiet intensity.

Secretary Millie searches for a husband and accepts Frank’s proposal even though she doesn’t really love him, because he can “support [her] nicely.” When Frank’s sister Helen falls ill, Millie steps in to care for her household, including 2 young sons. At the end of a very busy day, Millie asks Helen how she can do it, and Helen says only “real love” makes it bearable. Realising she doesn't love Frank enough to do this, Millie breaks her engagement and will keep her office job until true love appears.
