History

The issue was part of DC's Secret Files and Origins line, a series of one-shot companion specials launched in 1997 alongside Grant Morrison's JLA that blended origin stories, Who's Who-style character profiles, and short fiction into a single oversized package. Edited by Maureen McTigue and Tony Bedard, the special assembled virtually the entire creative ecosystem of the Nightwing ongoing: lead writer Chuck Dixon paired again with his regular art team of Scott McDaniel and Karl Story, while Devin Grayson (then writing Titans and the 'No Man's Land' tie-in segments) contributed two short stories, and Scott Peterson supplied a gymnastics-guide backup drawn by Will Rosado. The breadth of artistic contributors — including Phil Jimenez, Brian Stelfreeze, Greg Land, Dale Eaglesham, Graham Nolan, Damion Scott, Gene Ha, and Jackson Guice — reflects both the celebratory anthology nature of the format and the depth of talent DC was deploying across its Batman-family line in 1999.
