After her beloved husband Austen Barlo dies, grieving Ann Barlo wants to kill herself to join him in death. But her greedy sister murders her instead, so she and her husband can inherit their farm. Afterwards, while ploughing the fields, they are approached by fertilizer producer Jacobus (a friend of the Barlos). He offers to give them a special fertilizer that will grow miracle crops if they promise to use it near an old willow tree patch. They agree, not realizing that is where Austen is buried. The fertilizer revives Austen's rotting corpse and he exacts revenge on the couple.
