The Vigilante #5

Apr 1984 · DC · 1.25 USD; 1.50 CAD
“Witnesses”

In "Witnesses," the fifth issue of The Vigilante (1984), Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard deliver a tense, grounded thriller as two rival mob bosses are assassinated—leaving Adrian, the Vigilante, furious when Assistant D.A. Marcia King spares the killers to uncover their employer. When Adrian takes justice into his own hands, he’s brutally wounded, forcing J.J. to make a desperate move: hijacking the ambulance carrying the unconscious hero before Captain Hall and the police can expose him. The cover by Ed Hannigan and Dick Giordano captures the urgency of the moment, setting the stage for a story where loyalty, identity, and the cost of vigilance collide.

Two different assassins knock off two rival mob bosses and Adrian is unhappy when his new love interest, Assistant D.A. Marcia King, lets them both go so she can spy on who they are working for. Vigilante takes matters into his own hands and attacks them but is shot and stabbed for his trouble. Scared that their mission is about to be totally compromised, J.J. hijacks the ambulance with a badly wounded Vigilante in the back before Captain Hall and the police discover his secret identity.
