The X-Men #109
X-Men #109 (February 1978) marks the first appearance of James MacDonald Hudson as Weapon Alpha — the Canadian government agent dispatched by Department H to forcibly retrieve Wolverine — a character who would eventually evolve into Vindicator and then Guardian, the founding leader of Alpha Flight. The issue also contains the first recorded use of the name 'Weapon X' in the Marvel Universe, a designation that would become central to Wolverine's entire mythology for decades to come. Beyond that single debut, the story plants the seed for what became Marvel's flagship Canadian superhero franchise: the mention of Alpha Flight in this issue is the team's earliest appearance in the continuity, predating the full team's debut in X-Men #120 by more than a year. It is also only the second issue drawn by John Byrne on the title, signaling the dawn of the celebrated Claremont–Byrne collaboration that would define the series through the Dark Phoenix Saga and Days of Future Past.

The issue was written by Chris Claremont and penciled by John Byrne — only Byrne's second issue on the book after joining in #108 — with inks by Terry Austin, colors by Andy Yanchus, lettering by Joe Rosen, and editorial oversight from Archie Goodwin. Byrne, a Canadian himself, is credited by commentators as the creative force behind introducing a Canadian superhero into Wolverine's backstory; he had originally wanted to call the character Guardian, a name he had used for the character in fan work drawn from a line in the Canadian National Anthem, but editor-in-chief Jim Shooter vetoed the name due to its similarity to the Guardians of the Galaxy, prompting Claremont to use 'Weapon Alpha' for the debut, with 'Vindicator' following later. The cover was produced by Dave Cockrum and Terry Austin, even though Cockrum had just departed as interior artist.
