About this Issue

The X-Men #5 is a foundational second chapter in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants saga, cementing the moral architecture that would define mutant storytelling for decades: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver appear here as reluctant members of Magneto's faction, already voicing their distaste for his methods and hinting at the heroic turns they would eventually take in the Avengers. The issue also marks the debut of Asteroid M — Magneto's orbital headquarters — a concept that writers would return to again and again across X-Men continuity. It introduces Jean Grey's parents, John and Elaine Grey, whose connection to Marvel Girl gives the team a grounded human anchor and a family dynamic that later writers would mine for tragedy. As only the fifth issue of the series, the book was actively road-testing the idea that a villain's team could carry genuine moral complexity, a structural innovation that quietly shaped how Marvel would write antagonists throughout the Silver Age.

In "Trapped: One X-Man!", the X-Men face their greatest test yet when Professor Xavier’s powers mysteriously vanish, leaving the team leaderless and vulnerable. With Magneto manipulating events from the shadows and the Toad causing chaos at a public event, the team must rely on their own instincts—only to be drawn into a daring rescue mission on Asteroid M, where Angel is held captive. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated with dynamic energy by Jack Kirby, with inks by Paul Reinman and colors by Stan Goldberg, this pivotal issue features a cover by Kirby and Reinman, with additional inks by Marie Severin.

History

Written by Stan Lee and penciled by Jack Kirby — the same team behind every issue to that point — The X-Men #5 was released on March 3, 1964 with a cover date of May 1964, published at the standard 12-cent price. Paul Reinman inked the issue, and according to close readers of the run, this was his final issue on the book before Chic Stone took over as series inker from issue #6 onward. Stan Lee served as his own editor, as was standard Marvel practice under publisher Martin Goodman during this period.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Second appearance of Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff), Toad (Mortimer Toynbee), and Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde), all introduced one issue earlier in X-Men #4.
  • First appearance of Asteroid M, Magneto's orbital space headquarters — a location destroyed by issue's end but subsequently rebuilt and revisited across decades of X-Men comics.
  • First appearance of Jean Grey's parents, John Grey and Elaine Grey (though their names are not used in the issue's dialogue itself); the two characters would go on to appear in more than 30 X-Men stories before their deaths in the 'Grey's End' arc.
  • Third appearance of Magneto, who kidnaps Angel (Warren Worthington III) and transports him to Asteroid M to use as bait against the X-Men.
  • The issue's twist ending reveals that Professor X's apparent loss of telepathic powers was a staged test of his students' independence — though the Marvel Database notes this is logically inconsistent, as Xavier covertly guided the Toad to summon the X-Men's transport to Asteroid M.
  • Written by Stan Lee, penciled by Jack Kirby, inked by Paul Reinman (his final issue on the series), and lettered by Sam Rosen.
  • The story title is 'Trapped: One X-Man!' — a direct follow-on from the Brotherhood conflict begun in X-Men #4.
  • Reprinted in Marvel Super-Heroes #24 (January 1970), Amazing Adventures (Marvel, 1979 series) #9 (August 1980) and #10 (September 1980), and X-Men: The Early Years #5 (September 1994).

With Xavier's mental powers gone, the X-Men try to decide how they will function without his leadership. Trying to ferret out the X-Men, Magneto has the Toad enter an athletic event where he leaps to victory. With the crowd turning hostile due to the Toad's amazing abilities, the X-Men arrive on the scene to capture him. Magneto snags Angel and whisks him away to Asteroid M. In an attempt to trade the Toad for Angel, the X-Men arrive on Asteroid M where they battle the Brotherhood once again. On their safe return to Earth, Xavier reveals that his power loss was a ruse to test his students.
