About this Issue

As the concluding chapter of the five-issue prequel miniseries bridging the gap before the Disney+ MCU animated series premiered, this issue represents the first comics narrative set in the alternate MCU timeline designated Earth-86445 — a universe built specifically around Peter Parker's origin story under the mentorship of Norman Osborn rather than Tony Stark. The issue resolves the Silvermane arc that anchored the entire run, depicting a young Peter Parker using his brain as much as his powers: he and Nico Minoru conspire to leak Silvermane's criminal files to journalists, effectively weaponizing journalism against organized crime in a way that echoes the earliest Lee-Ditko sensibility while placing it in a modern media landscape. Critically, the series as a whole — and this finale in particular — reintroduced classic Silver Age villains like Silvermane and the Enforcers (Fancy Dan, Man Mountain Marko) to a new generation of readers through a media-franchise tie-in format, demonstrating that print comics can serve as meaningful narrative on-ramps rather than mere promotional pamphlets for animated properties.

History

In September 2024, Marvel Comics announced a five-issue prequel miniseries sharing the title of the forthcoming Disney+ animated series, with writer Christos Gage — a Marvel veteran whose Spider-Man credits include Amazing Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man — and artist Eric Gapstur assigned to the book, and covers by Leonardo Romero. The series launched in December 2024, timed to precede the animated show's January 29, 2025 Disney+ debut, and showrunner Jeff Trammell publicly noted that the comic was designed to fill a specific timeline gap in the animated series' first episode, with the possibility of future comics filling additional gaps. Issue #5, the finale, shipped April 23, 2025, and the full run was subsequently collected in the trade paperback 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Old School/New School' published by Penguin Random House.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Final issue (#5 of 5) of the prequel miniseries to the Disney+ MCU animated series 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man'; released April 23, 2025 (cover-dated June 2025).
  • Written by Christos Gage, art and inks by Eric Gapstur, colors by Jim Campbell, letters by VC Joe Caramagna, cover by Leonardo Romero; edited by Jordan D. White.
  • The issue concludes the Silvermane arc: Spider-Man and Nico Minoru remotely hack and leak Silvermane's criminal files to news outlets, Spider-Man survives being thrown from a rooftop by Man Mountain Marko by using his wall-crawling grip, then defeats Marko and Fancy Dan before forcing Silvermane to drop his legal threats.
  • All characters in this issue appear as their Earth-86445 counterparts — the alternate MCU timeline of the animated series — meaning Silvio Manfredi/Silvermane, Daniel Brito/Fancy Dan, and Michael Marko/Man Mountain Marko are their animated-universe versions, not the mainline Earth-616 incarnations.
  • The comic series deliberately features villains — including Silvermane and the Enforcers — who do not appear in the animated TV series itself, expanding the world of the show exclusively through the print medium.
  • A hallucination or vision of Uncle Ben Parker appears during Peter's freefall, reinforcing that Ben was already dead before Peter gained his powers in this continuity — a notable departure from the classic origin.
  • Three cover variants were published for this issue: the main Leonardo Romero cover, a Dan Parent variant, and a Marvel Animation variant.
  • The complete five-issue run was collected in the trade paperback 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Old School/New School' (ISBN 9781302961466), published by Penguin Random House.
