Colleen Doran was born on July 24, 1964, and has built one of the more distinctive careers in American comics over four decades, working as both a writer-artist and illustrator across hundreds of comics, graphic novels, books, and magazines. Her catalog credits stretch from 1983 through 2025, encompassing titles as varied as her own long-running series *A Distant Soil*, *Shade, the Changing Man*, *Valor*, *Reign of the Zodiac*, *Book of Lost Souls*, and *Justice League 3001*.
A Distant Soil #2 (1989)
Doran has demonstrated particular strength as an adapter of literary material. Her illustrated autobiography of Stan Lee, *Amazing Fantastic Incredible Stan Lee*, reached the *New York Times* bestseller list, as did her adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story "Troll Bridge." Her collaboration with Gaiman has proven especially fruitful: the 2019 graphic novel *Snow, Glass, Apples* won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel and the Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium, among other honors. Her subsequent Gaiman adaptation, *Chivalry*, earned a second Eisner for Best Adaptation, the Locus Award for Best Illustrated and Art Book, and a Ringo Award.
A Night in a Moorish Harem #1 (1996)
Beyond Gaiman, she has illustrated work by Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Anne Rice, Joe R. Lansdale, J. Michael Straczynski, Tori Amos, and Peter David. Her books have collectively received Eisner, Harvey, Bram Stoker, Locus, and International Horror Guild recognition.
