Don McGregor
Donald Francis McGregor was born on June 15, 1945, and is an American comic book writer whose career with Marvel Comics and beyond stretched across more than five decades, with credits on 188 issues between 1971 and 2023.
McGregor made his mark early with *Jungle Action*, where his extended Black Panther storylines brought a new seriousness and literary ambition to superhero comics — long-form narratives that treated the character and his world with genuine depth at a time when few mainstream writers attempted such sustained storytelling. His work on *Amazing Adventures* similarly pushed against the grain of conventional superhero fare. He is also recognized as one of the earliest practitioners of the graphic novel form, helping establish the format's credibility before it became industry standard.
Beyond Marvel, McGregor wrote *Sabre*, an independent science-fiction series, and later took on licensed work including *Zorro* and *Lady Rawhide*, demonstrating a versatility that kept him productive well into the 2000s. *Marvel Comics Presents* became another prominent venue for his writing. Throughout his career he brought an unusually character-driven, prose-conscious sensibility to the medium, collaborating with a range of artists across genres. His early Black Panther work in particular is now widely regarded as foundational to how that character developed, earning him a lasting place in comics history.
