What you’re looking at
This page contains record reviews, a letter to the editor, and a full-page advertisement for Silver King Fizz. **The Letter ("Not in This Club"):** A club president denies that "John C. Williams" is a member, claiming someone fraudulently used the club's stationery to write a previous letter criticizing political commentator Elmer Davis. The editor notes the original letter was "particularly violent" but stands by publishing it, treating the anonymous author with ironic skepticism. **The Advertisement:** Silver King Fizz is marketed as a mixer for illegally-obtained alcohol during Prohibition. The ad brazenly acknowledges this—referencing "your supply of ????"—while claiming the product "ages" and "mellows" homemade liquor. It's a straightforward pitch to consumers circumventing Prohibition laws, packaged as a New Year's celebration aid. The humor lies in the barely-concealed winking at illegal activity.

Sir: My attention has been invited to the enclosed letter printed in your Novem- ter gth issue of Lire and signed by one “John C. Williams, University Club, Har- risburg, Pa.” There is no member of the University Club of Harrisburg bearing the name John C. Williams. We have not had a member by that name. Our city directory does not contain such a name. We be- lieve no member of our Club is using such a name in writing you, as letters addressed to the said “John C. Williams” in care of our Club from various sections of the country and apparently in answer to his letter have not been claimed. Apparently some misguided individual has secured some of our stationery and is using it much to our discredit. This is the second time such a thing has hap- pened. Believe me when I tell you that the sentiments expressed in the Williams let- ‘er are not the sentiments of the mem- ters of our Club and we very much re- gret its publication, and ‘would appreciate ivery much if you would disregard such ktters in the future. Kindly publish this in defense of our crganization. Mark T.
