Fallen Angels #1
"Runaway" kicks off Fallen Angels #1 (1987) with a tense, character-driven story that finds Bobby Drake on the edge—after a painful fight with Sam, haunted by a cryptic file from Professor X, and suddenly gone. Written by Jo Duffy and illustrated by Kerry Gammill with inks by Tom Palmer, the issue captures a raw, emotional moment in the New Mutants’ world, as Warlock sets out to find Bobby while he’s drawn into a dangerous encounter with a streetwise girl named Chance. The cover by Kerry Gammill and Tom Palmer perfectly frames the story’s mood—loneliness, uncertainty, and the first flicker of something new.

Magneto asks Moira for her help in evaluating his charges in the New Mutants. The kids are playing soccer when Sam runs into Bobby and hurts him. Bobby throws Sam violently into a tree. Feeling down on himself and with all of his friends off at the hospital with Sam, Bobby sees a file written by Professor X which seems to indicate that he was worried Bobby would become like his father. The others return to find that Bobby has run away. Warlock takes off to try and find him. Bobby meets the rough and tumble Chance and attempts to save her from a group of street toughs but his powers blink off.
